Marion Reader, MSW, IMH-E
Marion is a queer, disabled social worker, dancer, teacher, mentor and infant-family specialist based in Seattle, WA. Extremely passionate about creating joyful childhoods for all kiddos, Marion has nearly 15 years of experience working with children birth to 5 and their families. From classroom teaching to 1:1 support for children with disabilities, they have spent time with young children in a wide variety of settings. Marion has worked closely with families throughout their career and has developed a focus on community-based child and family support that centers the importance of creative, holistic, and joyful interventions.
Working with disabled children and caregivers is one of Marion’s passions. As a disabled person who grew up with disabled parents and family members, their lived experience offers a unique lens to the children and families they support. It is not easy to raise a disabled child in a society that does not always embrace them. It is not easy to be a disabled parent whose style of caregiving may look vastly different from their abled peers. Coming out of the disability justice movement in the Bay Area, Marion brings a liberatory lens to their work with disabled folks, honoring the systemic challenges we face, centering our strengths, and, most of all, getting creative about accessibility for everyone.
Another of Marion’s passions comes from their roots in theatre and dance education. They use a sensory and movement-based lens in all of their work, leaning into the importance of the arts, movement, and play in early childhood development. For the last 6 years, Marion has been a part of the team at Project Commotion, a community-based organization that focuses on movement and play as tools for whole child development. Through their work with Project Commotion and through the children and families they have spent time with in their immediate community, Marion has seen the immense benefit of a movement and play-based lens in supporting families in weathering tough times, finding joy together, and supporting their children in reaching the next phase of their developmental process.
Marion holds an MSW from the University of Washington with a concentration in Community-Centered Integrative Practice, a graduate certificate in Infant-Toddler Mental Health from Portland State University, and a B.A. in Dance and Psychology with a concentration in Infant Mental Health from Mills College. They are a graduate of the Washington State Teaching Artist Training Lab and are an endorsed Infant-Family Specialist in Washington.
Outside of their work with children and families, Marion is an avid reader, a lover of cats, and spends their time cultivating community spaces with their queer, disabled loved ones.
